Early Childhood

We offer parent child classes, preschool,  kindergarten, a summer program that runs during all but three weeks of summer vacation and an extended care program that ends at 5:30 p.m. daily. Our programs are licensed with the state of California. All our early childhood programs are pre-academic and play-based. Although the programs differ according to the children’s developmental ages, all programs work together to provide a continuum of care for the children. Our programs provide educational and community-building opportunities for the parents.

Our early childhood lead teachers have earned Waldorf Teaching Certificates and they continue deepening their understanding of anthroposophy and child development by taking various courses, including attendance at teacher training conferences at Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks and other local workshops.

We continue to strive to provide a seamless full-day program serving our preschool and kindergarten children with consistency of care for working families, so that parents have the possibility of year-round care that supports the needs of the developing child.

Our programs provide protection from sensory overload and other academic pressures. We provide many opportunities for children to develop their foundational senses in a healthy way as well as to learn social skills according to their development.

Parent-Child Program

Our parent-child program is a structured, play-based and developmentally appropriate program for children, aged walking through twenty-eight months of age, and their parents or caregivers. The program provides a small group to engage in a nurturing, joyous environment of creative play, craft activities, circle time with singing, finger games, movement, snack preparation, a puppet story, and outdoor time. Parents and caregivers may find support by discussing issues pertaining to parenting and by observing their children in an imaginative and secure environment. The program meets weekly for approximately six to eight week sessions.

Preschool

Our preschool program is a structured, play-based and developmentally-appropriate program with a balance between child-directed and group activities. The program serves children ages 2 years 3 months old to 4 years 2 months (at the beginning of the school year). The group activities include circle time, story, and a healthy mealtime. Songs, stories, puppetry, movement, and artistic and domestic activities enable children to explore their relationships to themselves, each other, and the world around them. The program weaves daily and weekly rhythms around seasonal themes. The program is offered five days a week from 8:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Children may be dropped off as early as 8:00 a.m. for no extra charge. We offer two, three, and five day options. An optional extended-day program is available until 5:30 p.m.

Kindergarten

We have two mixed-age kindergartens, serving children ages 4 years 3 months old to 6 years 2 months (at the beginning of the school year). Typically, each kindergarten has twenty children daily with a lead and an assistant teacher. Waldorf educators have always sought to protect the wonder and magic of early childhood. Our Waldorf kindergarten provides a nurturing, homelike environment, full of natural beauty, from the corner nature table with its changing seasonal tableaus, to the simple, unfinished toys that stimulate the child’s imagination. Baskets of river rocks, seashells, slices of birch branch, simple cloth dolls and wooden frames draped with gauzy cotton or shimmering silk come alive during creative play. These materials are transformed by the children into villages, castles, ships and forests as the moment’s drama unfolds.
